Good Fit Books

When children are reading independently, it is very important that they are reading books they can decode and comprehend at high levels. This will not only motivate them to read more, it will also progress their comprehension skills.

In library and in class, we have been talking about how to find good fit books. Today, I gave the kids their reading Lexile Reading scores so that they can their good fit books using the Mann Library Catalog. Be sure to ask your child to share with you how they can find a good fit book using their iPads and the Mann Library Catalog!

Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key

We will begin reading "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key" this week. For more information about the book, please visit the author's website: http://www.jackgantos.com/books/joey-pigza-swallowed-the-key

We will be reading and discussing this book for the next 4 week. The kids will be responsible for reading part of the book on their own each week.

Here is the schedule and the assignment each week:

During Reading Activities
Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key

Research shows that good readers interact with the text while they read.  This means they are stopping to think while they read.

As you read the novel, you are going to have to complete one post-it note per chapter focusing on a specific skill listed below.  When you complete your post-it note, leave it in the book by the chapter/page it is for.

Chunk 1: Predictions - CHAPTERS 1 - 4
Most chapters end with a cliff-hanger, and authors usually leave you some clues as to what will happen next.  At the end of each chapter you are to: stop reading and make a prediction!  PLEASE don’t look ahead- remember it is ok if you are not accurate, just try your best using the clues.

Chunk 2: Connections - CHAPTERS 5 - 8
As you read this week, you need to make one connection per chapter.  To make your connection, answer one of the below questions as you read each chapter.
  • Focusing on text-to-self connections:
    • What does this story remind you of?
    • Can you relate to the characters in the story?
    • Does anything in this story remind you of anything in your own life?
  • Focusing on text-to-text connections:
    • What does this remind you of in another book you have read?
    • How is this text similar to other things you have read?
    • How is this text different from other things you have read?
  • Focusing on text-to-world connections:
    • What does this remind you of in the real world?
    • How are events in this story similar to things that happen in the real world?
    • How are events in this story different from things that happen in the real world?

Chunk 3: One Sentence Summary - CHAPTERS 9 - 11
In only one sentence, you must summarize each chapter you read in this chunk.

Chunk 4: Your Choice - CHAPTERS 12 - END
You get to pick what you want to do for each chapter's sticky note: Prediction, Connection, or summary!
